Marketing Opportunity Cost

People go through life not really knowing what they are missing out on.

And that's okay - its really not their fault - it's not our fault.

The truth is that we have a really hard time understanding opportunity cost because the only reality we can really imagine is the one we are experiencing now. Without a proper time machine or simulation machine, we have a hard time of seeing all of the possibilities in life that presents itself on a daily basis.

What if we talked to that person we wanted to talk to? What if we didn't go to that event because we felt like we "had to"? 

When people think about trade offs they think of the event - go to the event or not go to the event as a trade off, however in reality it is more then that. Its a choice that will create future choices and situations - it will create new realities that you could live in that you didn't even think were possible.

As marketers, we can open the eyes of people by exploring the possibilities they could be missing out on. This starts by allowing them to imagine a different future or a better reality by painting a picture of what the opportunity cost truly is. Once they not only can imagine the reward of the that different reality but also see the cost of not taking action they will be much more aspired to go down a journey and take that risk because everything is in perspective for them now - they see the other pathways of possibility.
